Emily Rosenzweig is a member of the Dames de Perlage. The group’s French name translates to Ladies of Bead Work. These dedicated, artistic women design and create colorful and intricate hand-beaded bustiers and accompanying apparel for their appearances in several Mardi Gras parades. Each member spends months doing painstaking hand beading and the resulting creations are as individual as the members themselves. This year, the theme for these unique creations is Patron Saints of New Orleans. Some of the tongue-in-cheek “saints” parade-goers will see include Saint Dan Gill, patron saint of New Orleans’ gardeners and Saint René Brunet, patron saint of moviegoers and theaters. In this podcast, Perlage dame, Emily, who hales from Upstate New York, discusses the big culture shock she received when she moved to New Orleans, and talks about her involvement in the Dames. Catch the Dames de Perlage in the Krewe of Tucks parade on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at noon.
