John Magill -Prohibition-
John Magill is a Curator and Historian at The Historic New Orleans Collection. John gives us a colorful glimpse of New Orleans during Prohibition. When the United States government outlawed alcohol in 1920, home breweries sprang up overnight in New Orleans. Many people said that mere days after the start of Prohibition, 10,000 New Orleanians had already broken the law. In fact, according to John, New Orleans was one of the country's leading distributors of prohibited alcohol. John reveals which Louisiana parish profited most from illegal alcohol and explains where the contraband alcohol came from.
