Carnival
History

John Magill is a local historian and expert on New Orleans’ many unique historical facts. In this podcast, John explains the origins of our Carnival celebration. Locals and others will find John’s information fascinating. According to John, the earliest Carnival celebrations in New Orleans most likely took place sometime between 1720 and 1730. In addition, many people may not know that during this period, men often costumed as women on Mardi Gras day, and vice versa. Perhaps Carnival is what gives New Orleanians our sense of humor and the ability to laugh at ourselves and not to take things too seriously. However, John points out that one thing all New Orleanians do take very seriously during Carnival is our King Cake tradition.
