Nazrat Rahman is co-owner and chef of Schiro's Cafe in the Faubourg Marigny. For over a century, this New Orleans building has been home to at least two businesses. Many years ago, Schiro's was a corner neighborhood grocery store. When Nazrat and her husband bought the building and the business 25 years ago, they decided to honor the Schiro name and called their restaurant Schiro's Cafe. Schiro's Cafe is arguably one of New Orleans' most unusual corner businesses. Besides the cafe that serves some of the best Indian cuisine in New Orleans along with traditional local fare such as red beans and rice, and po-boys, Schiro's offers a Bed and Breakfast, a laundromat, and a small grocery area. Nazrat explains how she began cooking and shares her thoughts about why good food is so important to her.
