Sherlyn Hughes is the program manager for Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans. January is National Mentoring Month, and Volunteers of America is hosting a Mentor Drive to recruit volunteers for two of its programs for at-risk youth: Mentoring Children of Promise and Positive Pathways. In this podcast, Sherlyn explains that the Mentoring Children of Promise program provides children ages 4-18 years with quality, long-term mentors. The organization’s Positive Pathways Program helps reintegrate young people, ages 14-24 years, who were previously incarcerated and were involved in the juvenile justice system. This vital program provides appropriate support through community agencies that offer workforce, educational, coaching, legal and other targeted services. For New Orleanians who are frustrated with crime in New Orleans, these programs are ways that everyday citizens can contribute to the solution of this oppressive problem by becoming much-needed mentors.
